Captain’s Choice Bay Rum – Up North Pirate

Pre-shave Thoughts:

On this dark and stormy Spring morning, I’m feeling like some spice.  So, I’m reaching for the new Captain’s Choice Bay Rum shaving soap.  I think I’ll pair it with the lovely Captain’s Choice North aftershave.  My face is feeling relatively healthy and shave-ready.  Let’s give this new soap from Captain’s Choice a go.

The Shave:

Preparation:  Hot shower

Razor:  Merkur 34c HD Straight Bar Safety Razor

Blade: Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Platinum (7 O’Clock Black) Razor Blade

Soap:   Captain’s Choice Bay Rum Shaving Soap

Brush:   Grooming Company Synthetic Brush (available from BullGoose Shaving Supplies

Finish:  Captain’s Choice North Aftershave

Post-shave Thoughts:

That was quite a soothing and nourishing shave.  I really enjoyed going back to the Grooming Co. synthetic brush for my lather machine.  The Plisson fibers arranged in a shorter, wider knot make for a soft but stiffer experience compared to the original Plisson brushes.  Loading from the dry, very soft, cream-like Captain’s Choice Bay Rum soap was quite simple, and I probably put a little too much product into the brush fibers as I didn’t initially realize how soft this soap was.  Very little puck foam developed while loading and, after about 10 seconds of swirling, I had more than enough product.  I laid down a base coat with a couple paintbrush-style strokes on my freshly showered and damp face.  Then, I began the face lather.  Swirling the brush vigorously, I worked the product into my whiskers, but the paste was too dry.  So, I dipped my brush into the hot tap water reserve a few times, mixing in a fair amount of water to build the paste to a very dense, creamy lather.  Captain’s Choice Bay Rum soap does not produce a lofty, fluffy lather.  Rather, I have continually achieved a remarkably slick and very dense, creamy lather with the proper water-to-product ratio.  I found the Captain’s Choice Bay Rum lather to have a bright sheen when it is the proper consistency for my preference.

I completed my standard three pass shave, one pass with the whisker growth, then two passes across the stubble pattern in opposing directions.  The legendary Merkur 34c paired with one of my favorite blades, the Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Platinum made for a close and smooth shave.  I appreciate the audible feedback of the razor and the closeness it achieves without being too harsh on my facial skin.  The Merkur 34c glided like a cold efficient machine on the extremely slick Captain’s Choice Bay Rum lather.  I found the lather to be quite protective and it left behind a slick residue coating my face after the razor initially passed over.  In between passes, my face felt quite nourished and healthy.  After the final rinse, my face was hydrated and moisturized.  Captain”s Choice Bay Rum shaving soap gave an exquisite post-shave feel.

The scent of Captain’s Choice Bay Rum shaving soap mirrors their aftershave offering by the same name.  Off the puck, I picked-up a relatively strong cinnamon spice with hints of light citrus.  During the face lather, the spicy scent enriched to include a healthy dose of West Indie Bay that predominated throughout the three pass shave.  I find Captain’s Choice Bay Rum to be one of my favorite bay rum scents, and I believe it exemplifies the genre.

I finished the shave with a substantial dose of Captain’s Choice North Aftershave.  Upon initial application I felt a quick warming burst of alcohol sting but with a strong juniper berry aroma rather than the typical alcohol smell.  As the aftershave began to dry, I was immersed in a bright evergreen resin aroma that exhibited a rich, spicy base not unlike the original Captain’s Choice Bay Rum.  I did pick-up slightly sweet vanilla and clove notes that seemed to come and go as I was cleaning up my shaving tools.  After about 10 minutes of a soothing, cooling dry down, my face felt quite soft and supple with a hint of moisturizing residue as if I had applied a light coat of face lotion.  This was a delightful experience in sum, and my face was protected and nourished for the day.

I’m liking the Captain’s Choice soap line. Have you tried their North flavor? It’s my favorite. Do you know who makes this soap for them?

I have the Captain’s Choice North aftershave but not the soap. I really enjoy the scent and would like to pick up the soap. Good stuff. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment!
