Phoenix Cucumber – Fresh & Crisp

Pre-shave Thoughts:

I’m looking to start the week clean and refreshed.  So, I’m reaching for Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements Cucumber shaving soap and pairing it with Fine Accoutrements Platinum aftershave.  Spring is in the air, and this crisp combination should do me right.  My face is feeling pretty good, healthy and wound free.  Let’s get this shave going.

The Shave:

Preparation:  Hot shower

Razor:  Dorco Prime Chrome Plated Brass Butterfly Shaver (sample provided by Dorco for review)

Blade:  Dorco ST-301 Platinum Blade (sample provided by Dorco for review)

Soap:  Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements Cucumber Shaving Soap

Brush:  Semogue Owners Club Cherry Wood Handle Boar Bristle

Finish:  Fine Accoutrements Platinum Aftershave Splash

Post-shave Thoughts:

That was a fresh and crisp shave.  I reached for the Semogue Owners Club brush this morning because it is one of my favorites.  Loading with the damp brush, that had been soaking in hot tap water for about 10 minutes while I showered, was a simple task from the dry, relatively soft Phoenix Cucumber puck.  After about 10-15 seconds of swirling, a thick soapy paste had accumulated between the well broken-in boar bristle.  I applied the minuscule amount of puck foam to my damp and freshly showered face, then began the face lather.  I do so enjoy the soft and supple bristles of a premium broken-in boar knot like the Semogue Owners Club.  The cleansing and exfoliating face feel is second to none.  After about a minute of swirling, I had whipped up a superbly dense and creamy Phoenix Cucumber lather.  I always get top tier lathers from Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements shaving soaps and Phoenix Cucumber was no different.

I completed my standard three pass shave, one pass with the stubble growth, then two subsequent passes across the whisker pattern in opposing directions.  This is my third shave with the Dorco Prime razor since receiving it for review.  So far, I have found that it provides quite a mild shave that is different from most other razors in my fleet.  The razor glided nicely on the slick, protective Phoenix Cucumber lather.  After the first pass, I still had quite a bit of one day’s growth hair on my face.  I certainly could hear the audible feedback of the Dorco Prime razor and the first pass felt comfortable on my face.  Similar to other shaves with the Dorco Prime razor, I did feel the sharp, poky angles of the safety bar and twist-to-open mechanism in more difficult to reach places like on my jaw below my ear lobe and on my lip under my nose.  I think this is just the nature of the stamped metal parts used in the razor’s construction.  I continued beard reduction for the second and third passes.  I then spent a fair amount of time touching-up areas on my face that exhibit denser hair growth.  While the Dorco Prime razor felt comfortable for the three passes, during the touch-up, I had to go over the same spots several times in attempts for a closer shave.  I stopped before inducing any irritation and the shave was of average closeness as a result.  The Dorco ST-301 razor blade performed well.  I did not feel any tugging or irritation from the blade.  The blade seems to exhibit above average sharpness and smoothness qualities.  I look forward to using the Dorco ST-301 blade in other razors to better experience what he blade is capable of.

The scent of Phoenix Cucumber is straight forward.  Off the puck, it smells like a slice off of a delicious, garden fresh cucumber.  It is a mild, clean scent that was noticeable during the face lather and throughout the shave, but dissipated quickly after the final rinse.  The Phoenix Cucumber scent is one dimensional in that what you get off the puck holds through the shave.  I really enjoyed the Phoenix cucumber scent as it felt very clean and fresh.  I think I’ll be using this crisp, fresh scented shaving soap more when the heat of the Summer is in full force.

I finished the shave with the venerable Fine Accoutrements Platinum.  I usually reach for Fine Platinum when I want that crisp, fresh feeling shave.  In usual fashion, I felt a stout alcohol sting upon initial application.  As the elixir dried and the alcohol fumes faded, the fresh, fruity, slightly powdery and smokey Platinum scent filled the air.  Both Phoenix Cucumber and Fine Platinum left my face feeling soft and supple.  I was ready for the day.
